Orisa Lifestyle Activities: Week 12

Show me, Don’t Tell Me: A picture is worth a thousand words. An image has a greater capacity for being self-explanatory; for instance, a crowd of children, hovering over a cake with five candles on it. Pictures can also evoke a broad range of thoughts, memories and emotions. Consider for example, images of Dr. King, Marcus Garvey or Booker T. Washington. Some images are fraught with stories of great historical significance and have timeless value. At the same time, it’s important to recognize the fact that you have the ability to CREATE powerful images. It starts by setting the stage properly. When carefully selected and properly placed, the decorations, colors, symbols and textures you use to fill your environment all conspire to tell a specific story. They help to create a particular kind of theme that reinforces personal and collective identity. In other words, as important as it is to TELL the world who you are and what you believe, it’s equally important to SHOW the world who you are by creating an environment that reflects your identity. The activity that follows will help you to create an environmental theme that supports a message you would like to communicate.

Please complete the following:

KNOW: Recall the outcomes of WEEK 10's activities, wherein you created an event in your house. What message did you select? How did you use the environment to communicate that message?
COMMIT: Select another theme and think about specific ways you can use your environment to communicate and reinforce a single message.
PRACTICE: Organize an event and use as much of your environment - including invitations, language, images, attire - to communicate a single message.
