Orisa Lifestyle Activities: Week 15

Trash to Treasure Hunt: A few simple changes can go a long way to creating an Òrisà Lifestyle. And because a healthy spirit is tied directly to a healthy environment, you can make Òrisà Lifestyle Agreements that will have a longterm impact on your relationship to the òrìsà. There’s a direct link between environmental health and spiritual development. As you become spiritually and socially mature, you learn the true value of decreasing your impact on the environment while working to create healthier communities, and starting in the òrìsà house is essential. In places like Cuba, Brazil and Nigeria, where Orisa Lifestyle is a long standing tradition, the idea of recycling is nothing new or trendy. It’s something that everyone participates in on a daily basis. Every nail, hinge, screw, plug, cable, oil barrel, plastic container and every household item is repaired, recycled, passed on to family and friends. Even the cars are pieced together with improvised, recycled or copied parts, making rare and unique machines that continue to run on the roads after 60 years of use! All of this means that less trash makes its way to the landfill. This means there is more healthy soil to plant and live upon for people and animals. To help address growing environmental concerns at the local level, the following activity can be used to help you and your community to make healthy, sustainable culture part of your spiritual discipline.
Please complete the following:

MATERIALS
  1. Treasure hunt list (prepare a list of trash and recyclables before the activity)
  2. Pen/Pencil
  3. 100% biodegradable bags
  4. Cloth gloves (recommended)
  5. Clock/Timer
  6. What is the name of your local landfill? Where is it located? Is it the first landfill in your community? How much trash is dumped there everyday? What material is most prominent in the local landfill? When will it be filled?

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Set a time limit for the activity (45 minutes is a good maximum)
  2. Divide into two teams: Each team needs a copy of the Treasure Hunt List, a pen/pencil, biodegradable bags (some bags will be for TRASH ONLY, others for RECYCLING ONLY)
  3. Each team will go to their designated Treasure Hunt Area:
  • One person from each team will be in charge of crossing items off the list as they are found
  • One person from each team will be in charge of holding the TRASH ONLY bag
  • Another person from each team will be in charge of holding the RECYCLING ONLY bag
  • The rest of the team will be in charge of going out to gather TRASH and RECYCLING
  • ANYTHING THAT IS NOT ON THE LIST CAN BE ADDED TO THE PROPER BAG AND ADDED TO THE LIST FOR EXTRA POINTS

KNOW:   What is the name of your local landfill? Where is it located? Is it the first landfill in your community? How much trash is dumped there everyday? What material is most prominent in the local landfill? When will it be filled?
COMMIT:   Think of 3-5 ways you can reduce the amount of trash that is deposited at the landfill? What would it require for your households to become ZERO waste?
PRACTICE:    Select one way in which you can reduce, reuse, recycle and compost one product 100% of the time.
