Orisa Lifestyle Activities: Week 3

Family Mobile:  If a picture is worth a thousand words, a symbol is worth ten chapters. Organizations, cities and world religions make use of symbols as a way to provide visual representations of their deepest beliefs and values.  Carl Jung wrote that "There is a thinking in primordial images, in symbols which are older than the historical man, which are inborn in him from the earliest times, eternally living, outlasting all generations, still make up the groundwork of the human psyche. It is only possible to live the fullest life when we are in harmony with these symbols; wisdom is a return to them."

ACTIVITIES
  • Set aside at least 2 hours for set up, activity and clean up
  • Check out these African Symbols and their meanings. Take turns sharing how you think they were used traditionally.
  • Now,

remember: The same symbols (like color, shape, image, etc) have different meanings to different people. No matter what the creator of the symbol thinks, the people who are looking at the symbol make their own meanings based on their own points of view. People looking at a symbol can also add their own meanings to symbols that have may or may not have the exact same meaning from the symbol’s creator.

  • Look at your list of words and symbols and think about the pictures and colors you listed. Pick only one image to use as a main symbol. Pick other colors that also represent the family input. Think about how large you want to arrange the symbol and colors on the flag, and what materials will work best for your flag.
