Orisa Lifestyle Activities: Week 8

Family Wealth:  We tend to think of wealth and money as the same thing. But, while money is only a form of currency, wealth is an accumulation of value. It can be material (like property and jewels) or it can be immaterial (like beliefs, knowledge and experience).  Pound for pound, one of the most powerful things you can do is to manage your family wealth in a way that increases your collective worth.  In order to make sure you’re not conflating money and wealth, let’s consider the meaning of common wealth. Imagine a single neighborhood that has beautiful parks, a state of the art library, excellent public schools, a world class museum, a phenomenal community center and an amazing, organic garden, replete with chickens and goats. Even if you have very little money, your quality of life will be relatively high if you grow up in that neighborhood.  Similarly, a family can manage its assets in ways that increase the wealth of all family members, regardless of financial status.  Clearly, the ability to manage family wealth this way requires commitment to a particular set of values. Money is only a problem where there are no clearly defined values. Finally, experiences create values. The activity that follows is designed to help your family make use of the values expressed in previous activities in a way that will help you to increase your family wealth.

ACTIVITIES

Please complete the following:

Materials:

·       Purchase the book entitled Family Wealth, Keeping it in the Family.
·       White board or poster paper
·       Colored markers and/or dry erase markers
·       Family flag
·       Family mobile
·       Aso Ebi

Display the family flag, mobile and aso ebi prominently. Invite family members to take turns describing the symbols, colors and their meanings. Next, as a family, read the introduction. Invite the family members who are fluent, strong readers to take turns reading paragraphs aloud. Invite other family members to use a white board or poster paper to make notes of the ideas that stand out most. Invite other family members to also use a white board or poster paper to draw pictures of their impressions of the reading. Post the images and notes in a place where everyone can see both the family symbols and their impressions of the reading. Invite your family members to take turns responding to the following questions:

1.     What from the reading stood out most for you? What was it about that information that piqued your interests?
2.     What was most surprising about the reading? How did that information support or contradict what you expected to hear?
3.     What are three things you learned about the wealthiest families and how they manage their wealth?

KNOW: Which values and traits does your family demonstrate that support wealth management? What unique attributes, skills and experiences does your family have? What unique contribution might your family make if you managed your wealth differently? What are three of your family’s core values?
COMMIT: What are three things you can do personally to reinforce your family’s core values?
PRACTICE: Select one thing you can do daily to support your family’s core values.
